Nitrocellulose-coated microarray substrates for protein, glycan and cell lysate arrays, tissue and cell printing and other applications where binding affinity, binding capacity and preservation of native bioactivities are important.

ONCYTE® Nitrocellulose Film Slides and Film Plates

The nitrocellulose Film-slide and Film-plate technology, trademarked ONCYTE®, was invented by Grace Bio-Labs scientists.  The ONCYTE® product is a three dimensional microporous film cast on a variety of solid surfaces (vis. Glass, plastic) comprised of a combination of nitrocellulose polymer and proprietary chemistry that provides an ideal surface for marker discovery and validation as well as study of protein function.  ONCYTE® nitrocellulose Films excel in various applications including: 

  • Antibody/Protein Capture Microarrays  (Knezevic et al, 2001; Scorilas et al, 2000)
  • Cell or Tissue Lysate Microarrays  (Paweletz et al, 2001; Sheehan et al, 2005)
  • Lectin/Glycan Capture Microarrays  (Fukui et al, 2002; Wang D et al, 2002)

Grace Bio-Labs offers two distinct nitrocellulose film coatings for protein microarrays:


ONCYTE® AVID™ for applications that require a high binding capacity (vis. Reverse phase tissue arrays). Marker detection with colorimetric, luminescent, NIR or radioactive end-points is desirable with this Film. Fluorescent end-points can also be used with special blocking or quenching protocols (call for information).

ONCYTE® NOVA™ for applications that require low autofluorescence backgrounds.

Nitrocellulose Film Structure Provides Additional Assay Flexibility For Custom Applications

The parameters of nitration, pore size, pore density, pore shape and void volume all influence protein capture and detection sensitivities and can be systematically varied to meet specific demands.  For example, pore structure can be changed from an “open weave”, which is preferred for “flow through” applications, to a “closed pore” which is more suitable for high resolution microscopic applications (McGrath et al, 1991).

Similarly, void volumes can be controlled to accommodate chromatographic or other transfer applications.  Other chemistries can be added to Film; for example, chemistries to preserve phosphoproteins (Espina et al, 2008; 2009) or to lower autofluorescence backgrounds.  Nitrocellulose can be derivatized to put functional groups on the backbone (Wang X et al, 2009) to augment or change molecular binding properties (Wang X et al, 2010).
